Yes, you read that correct. Rob and I decided long ago that we preferred cloth diapers to disposable diapers. Even with three tiny bums to cover, we’re planning to use cloth diapers. One kid usually requires diaper laundry every 2-3 days. We’ve pretty much resigned to the fact that our washer will be running on the daily, so one of those loads each day will have diapers in it.
I have lots of experience using pre-folds on a wee bum during the day, so that’s one decision down.
But what in the world should we use for nighttime? Pre-folds and covers with an extra stuffing? All-in-ones?
Obviously, cost is a HUGE factor, and I want diapers with staying power. If we can use the same thing during the day and night – that’s obviously ideal. Right? Or is it not? Halp!
I think nighttime diapers honestly just depend on the baby – their shape, how much they wet, etc. – far more than daytime diapers.
For what it’s worth, Rumparooz is our favorite nighttime diaper with the gussets & ability to use various inserts for absorption.
Congrats on the great decision to cloth diaper! We use Bum Genius 24/7 and I recently got a few Bum Genius 4.0s, which are awesome. We got those with snaps instead of velcro. I think the velcro may wear out after tons and tons of use, so maybe try the snaps for your triplets.
Oh please figure this problem out and then post the solution! We are having twins right around the time you’re having your triplets! I love cloth diapers too but every time I attempt research I get more overwhelmed. I feel like it’s another language…pre-folds? Stuffing? What?
I like Fuzzibunz for nighttime.
I don’t like prefolds for nighttime because the moisture stays close to baby’s skin. I prefer Fuzzibunz or BumGenius pocket diapers with a hemp insert behind the microfiber insert. When they are little, you are up and down around the clock anyway so I wouldn’t think a special night time diaper would matter as much as it does when they (hopefully) sleep longer stretches when they get older.
We currently use bumGenius 3.0’s around the clock. I have said multiple times if I ever need to buy more diapers it will be all-in-ones due to the countless hours of my life that have been spent stuffing diapers. We chose bg’s over other diapers for ease of velcro use for some of the arthritic hands that would be changing baby. We use BumGenius diapers most of the time. We also recently purchased some BG Flips, which I love! They are great for our active 16 month old.
For nighttime we use a bg 3.0 with a regular insert and a hemp insert, and it works great. Sometimes the flip (with an organic insert) works well too, but not as consistently.
I agree with Blair that it really depends on the shape of your baby and all that. I would do a trial and see what works…with 3 babes you might find 3 different things work!!
Girl, I LOVE my fuzzi Bunz or Bum Genius- they both last all night (I do double up inserts) and I’ve had very few leaks. Plus they are SUPER easy! they are both pocket AIO. Plus if you get the 3.0 bum genius you can get better prices and I think they are just as good as the 4.0’s.
We adore our BG 3.0 pocket diapers! They are awesome for both day and night considering you can stuff them as little or as much as is necessary. We triple stuff for nighttime and haven’t had a single leak. And the new 4.0s… fabulous. It does take a little extra time to stuff, but that’s the sacrifice for customized absorption, I guess. I have not regretted a single second of cloth diapering, it’s been such a great experience. If cost is a concern, which duh, you’re having three babies, of course it is, check diaperswappers.com for deals on gently used diapers. I haven’t bought on there, but I have sold, and it was very easy and user-friendly. As someone else mentioned, you can get them on Target’s Web site, too, and people tend to give Target gift cards for showers, which is nice. You can also register on a few CD Web sites. I didn’t start cloth diapering until my daughter was 6 months, so I’m no help for the newborn stage. Right now at night we are using the Bum Genius 3.0 shells with a SuperDo hemp/microfiber insert (made by Knickernappies). It works perfectly for us, and I don’t find it as bulky as it was with a bunch of inserts. They are pretty pricey for an insert though. I’ve been thinking about possibly switching to fitted diapers with a wool cover for nights. Nifty Nappy and Sustainablebabyish have been highly recommended to me from a few different people for fitteds.
I think pocket diapers would probably be your best bet. You would be able to customize them for each baby depending on their individual needs by changing up the inserts (in terms of both fabric choice and number of inserts needed.)
MotherEase is the best in my opinion–my kids’ skin always fared better soaked with natural materials overnight than in a dry-wick synthetics like BumGenius or Thirsties–though I can’t attest for the newest of BumGenius, as ours are a few years old. Recently, my son’s skin looks just fine in synthetics, but they tend to get stinky easily, unlike the natural materials. We’ve used MotherEase Sandys and One-Size. The XS Sandies are awesome for newborns. We’ve used all kinds–organic, bamboo, and regular cotton. Those are the most budget friendly and long lasting diapers we have used. My son is the using MotherEase that 3 other children wore for 2 years each–and after 6 years of use, they are a little thin, but perfectly fine with a doubler thrown in.
Also, for covers, our favorites are– Thirsties, Bummis Super Brites, Bummis nylon pull on, MotherEase AirFlo, and good old WOOL! Awesome for day or night!

Bum Genius 4.0’s or Rumparooz! Both are pocket diapers and I suggest getting them in snaps because the velcro does wear out after a while. However velcro is much easier for dads and they do sell cheap replacement kit.
Anyway we use both Bum Genius and Rumparooz with the extra (newborn) insert that comes with them. They come with a regular toddler insert but it can be snapped down to fit newborns so we use that PLUS the newborn insert (each diaper comes with both inserts!) for nighttime and works like a charm! Plus the best part? These diapers are called ONE SIZE meaning they fit from newborn to potty training! For real! I have diapered a newborn and put them on my 30 lb 2 1/2 year old for nighttime since he isn’t all the way night trained. They’re awesome!

I never used anything BUT prefolds (3 kids, though in succession ;-), and I used one during the day and two at night. I sometimes had to use a cover one size larger at night.
Totally the cheapest way to go.
I absolutely recommend using BG 4.0 pockets for nighttime. You can add extra inserts if you need more absorbency at night. We were able to use them at night until our son turned 2 and he became such a heavy wetter that we’d have to have 3 big inserts in them and he’d be laying with his butt elevated off the bed. In the interest of his comfort, we now use sposies at night. WTG on deciding to go cloth though! Also, if you want to know about detergent, I highly recommend CountrySave. It’s cheap and one of the best diaper detergents out there. I even saw that you can get it on Alice.com now in case no stores in your area carry it.
Bum Genius 3.0. I gotta say- the convenience of one diaper from birth-toilet training is not to be overlooked. Craigslist/ Target.com/ etc if you must but they really last. Though in your case maybe get them early and have them converted to snaps.

It compares costs, pros / cons of each, and does some demonstrations. We took the advice of buying many different brands to try out with our baby to see what works best. I’ve mainly purchased pocket diapers but also have some AIOs. We have lots of fuzzibunz and bum genius, but I also bought some ‘off brands’ through ebay. I could not get myself to buy any used diapers but ebay has some cheap new ones! Good luck and let me know what you end up using!
Can’t we let them sleep in a bed of hay or cedar chips? Like my hamsters from childhood.
We use a double stuffed BG Pocket diaper (hemp and microfiber). Definitely go with the snaps – our velcro has seen better days and I’m about to ship them to have them converted to snaps. Another option is a fitted with wool. Seriously – we used it for a while, but E grew out of her wool and I haven’t had a chance to buy another one. It was a great investment though – it fit her from 3 months until she was a year old. Seriously though – you could get away with prefolds for the first few months until they start sleeping in longer stretches. You could always use a fleece liner if you’re worried about the wetness staying against their skin.
I didn’t read the other posts so I apologize if this has already been said. When they are newborns I think, personally, just a prefold and a cover will be enough. Because, I hate to say it, they won’t be sleeping that long at night anway, so it’s not like you need a 12 hour diaper.
My DD is 11 months old now and we use one of two combinations at night (whichever is more handy at the moment): A fitted with a hemp doubler and a wool cover, or a prefold with a newborn prefold as a doubler (use a snappi instead of pins) and the same wool cover. I’m not sure if you’re into wool covers, so PUL covers are good too. This works for us. Sometimes you just have to experiment. I have also learned not to get too used to anything, because babies constantly change. So, just do what works for the time being.

For nighttime we use a regular prefold with a hemp insert inside it (we just fold the prefold into thirds). Then on top of the stuffed prefold, we put a BG fleece liner. We put all that inside a big ol’ Stacinator fleece cover, which is pretty much bulletproof for us.
I know SO many people recommend BG OS dipes, but for us we’ve had leaking and repelling issues from the start. I like Fuzzi Bunz better!
We use cloth too and LOVE it! I’m so happy to see other people jumping on the cloth bandwagon. They are WONDERFUL!
We use BG 3.0s (pocket diapers) and now the 4.0 (pocket diapers). We have them stuffed normally for daytime and double-stuff them for nighttime. He doesn’t get leaks and sleeps soundly through the night (and has since we started using cloth at 4 months old).
We found that the all in ones took a really long time to dry (especially important since we hang them outside to dry).
Not sure if you’re looking to buy your stash now or not, but if you are willing to wait until after the babies are born, you can try out Jillian’s Drawers “Try Cloth for 30.” They send you a bunch of different types of diapers (from the old school kind to the newer BumGenius/Fuzzibunz kinds and you can decide which ones work best for you). This was important because my son has really sensitive skin and some of the liners of the other diapers caused him to have a rash.

We have been using cloth diapers since our daughter was two months old. I would have started sooner but we received so many disposables as a gift that I just used them up first! She’s five months now and we still love our bum genius 3.0 one size diapers! I have one all in one BG but it takes forever to dry, like a day and a half, and we are in hot Florida! All of the 3.0s are velcro and it’s holding up great so far! I also have 3 BG4s with snaps, they are super soft! I have had very good luck with Cotton Babies (retailer for BG) they offer free shipping, and often have huge sales!

I just saw this, and since Johnny has experience with cloth diapers with both kids from his previous relationship, and since our/their daughter was in them exclusively I asked him. His advice was big diapers even when they are little, or two diapers and a cover until you learn what they do at night. He also said rubber pants, and put rubber pads over the mattresses (he said this is a must even if you don’t do the pants)…
We’ll be using cloth diapers when Littlest is born too, so it’s nice that you brought this up and I got to find out as well.

We use them all the time, double stuffing now at almost a year, and have minimal problems with leaking. Only every once in a while, and most of the time because I got the insert bunched. Ooops. Anyway, they are running a special now that’s buy 12 get 1 free, so for us we bought 30 diapers for about $250. It’s a lot more economical than BGs, Fuzzibunz, etc. We’ve been using ours for 8 months, and no breaking down at all.
